Project VENDA — Anti Drug Campaign Handbook

A Handbook for Parents of Children Affected by Substance Abuse

When a child struggles with substance abuse, the journey can be deeply distressing and isolating for parents. Families are often left searching for answers, guidance and, most importantly, a way to reach out and support their children.

This project involved the design and development of a Malayalam handbook that offers parents not just information, but understanding, reassurance and hope. Drawing from the knowledge and expertise of an existing handbook developed for counsellors, the publication translates essential guidance into a language and format that parents can connect with more personally.

Moving away from the conventional, clinical feel of a reference manual, the design adopts a warmer, more approachable and reassuring visual language. Through thoughtful typography, engaging layouts and accessible content presentation, the book was conceived as more than an information resource – it was designed to be a companion that parents can turn to without feeling judged, overwhelmed or alone.

Released on 14 November, Children’s Day, the publication was also developed in English to extend its reach beyond Malayalam-speaking communities. The bilingual editions provide an opportunity to share this important initiative on international platforms, including the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the World Federation Against Drugs (WFAD).

At its heart, the project is about replacing fear with understanding, helplessness with guidance, and isolation with hope.
